Doing something right
With top academic results and enrolment application rates at three children per vacancy, Britain’s Emmanuel College (see Storm over Successful School this issue) is clearly doing something right. The principal, Nigel McQuoid, and his predecessor, John Burn, wrote in 1997: ‘To teach children that they are nothing more than developed mutations who evolved from something akin to a monkey and that death is the end of everything is hardly going to engender within them a sense of purpose, self-worth and self-respect.’
